Tacoma trees: what's different here
Tacoma packs a lot of tree variety into an old, dense city: century-old street trees in the North End, Oregon white oaks in South Tacoma, madrones on the Narrows bluffs, and second-growth firs in the gulches. A few things local tree pros watch for:
Bluffs, gulches and slopes
From Ruston Way and the Narrows to the hillside under Northeast Tacoma, many lots sit on or near steep slopes. Tree roots help hold those slopes, and the city treats steep slopes as critical areas, so removal there may need a permit and usually calls for careful, piece-by-piece work.
Oregon white oaks
Tacoma is one of the few Puget Sound cities with native Garry (Oregon white) oaks, especially around South Tacoma. They grow slowly and live a long time. If you have one, ask about pruning or reducing weight before you think about removal. Washington treats oak woodlands as priority habitat, so it's worth asking the city whether your lot is affected.
Pacific madrone
Madrones on the Narrows and Point Defiance-area bluffs can lean dramatically and shed bark and leaves. Leaf blight and canker diseases are common. A lean on its own isn't proof the tree is unsafe, so have it assessed before you cut.
Old street trees and alleys
Many North End and Central blocks have mature trees in the planting strip, plus alleys where limbs reach over garages and power lines. Under city code those right-of-way trees are the adjacent owner's to maintain, and any pruning or removal needs a city permit.
